Richard Arthur Wollheim was born in London on May 5, 1923. He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford University. He taught philosopy at University College, London from 1949-1982. He also taught at Columbia University from 1982-1985, and at U.C. Berkeley from 1985 until his death on November 4, 2003. He held a chair in philosophy and humanities at U.C. Davis from 1989-1996.
